Choosing a joint supplement for yourself or a parent? Start with five things you can check: the label, the current product record, the evidence, the bundle and the seller. Use the same checklist for each product to make your comparison clearer.
1. Start with the full ingredient label
Ask for clear photographs of the current packaging, including the ingredients, directions and precautions. Note each ingredient's name and amount, then check whether that amount is per capsule, per tablet or per serving. Match the units before comparing the numbers.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements consumer guide explains ingredient amounts and serving sizes on supplement labels. Its US examples help explain how to read quantities; for a Malaysian product, check the actual local pack.
2. Check the current NPRA product record
Go through the NPRA consumer website to its official QUEST3+ Product Search. Search using the product name or registration details on the pack, then compare the record with the item you plan to buy. Check the current record yourself, even if a seller has shared a screenshot.
NPRA states that results apply at the time of the search and product status can change. If the details do not match, ask for clarification before ordering. This guide does not verify the registration status of any individual product.
3. Find out what the research actually tested
When a product page mentions research, open the source. Was the study about one ingredient, a particular extract or the finished formula? Look for the formulation, amount, participants, duration and outcome measured. These details give a study title or percentage its context.
NIH NCCIH notes that supplements sold in shops or online can differ from the products tested in studies. Check carefully before applying ingredient research to a finished product. Quality testing and clinical research also answer different questions, so read what each document actually covers.
4. Work out what your bundle includes
Write down the checkout total, delivery charges, number of bottles and units per bottle. Confirm exactly which items the offer includes. Then compare using the same units:
- Cost per capsule or tablet: total price ÷ total number of capsules or tablets.
- Cost per labelled serving: total price ÷ total servings stated or calculable from the label.
Compare like product formats and use the pack's directions to understand quantities. These calculations compare shopping costs; they do not suggest a dose. Before choosing a larger bundle, check the expiry dates and return terms too.
5. Know who to contact after checkout
Confirm who handles your order, how to ask questions and where to request product documents. Keep the listing and receipt so you can refer to the exact product and bundle you bought.
